| Effective banner
ad design is a combination of creativity and marketing. Before you design your ad you
should know who you are trying to reach and what motivates them to act. Then, try to think
of ways to motivate users to click on your banner. For suggestions, visit the WPRC guide.
Also, while you browse the web, pay attention to the banner ads that grab your attention.
Pay particular attention to the ads that appear on major web portals like Yahoo!,
Netcenter, and Snap! Ads on these sites are usually well-researched. They will give you a
good sense of what colors are most appealing and what words you should be using to
motivate action from users.
A Common Mistake
A common mistake new users make is to include too much text in an ad. Online ads
are not the same as print ads. With an Internet ad all you really want the user to
do is click. There is no need to try and "sell" anything. So it is usually a
good idea to focus on the shock value of your message and to emphasize that rather than a
"sales pitch". And don't forget to ask users to click. It may sound ridiculous,
but many users simply will not click on an ad, no matter how appealing, unless they are
instructed to do so.
